Psalm 145 is the last Psalm attributed to David. It’s the ultimate praise song! It’s worth memorizing. Pastor Sandy Adams wrote, “[This is] an acrostic psalm. Each verse begins with a succeeding letter of the Hebrew alphabet. A Jewish rabbi said of Psalm 145, ‘He who could pray this psalm from the heart three times daily, was preparing himself best for the praise of the world to come.’” That’s the idea of writing acrostic psalms. It made it easy for the Hebrews to memorize them.
Psalm 145
A psalm of praise of David.
1 I will exalt you, my God and King,
and praise your name forever and ever.
2 I will praise you every day;
yes, I will praise you forever.
3 Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise!
No one can measure his greatness.4 Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts;
let them proclaim your power.
5 I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor
and your wonderful miracles.
6 Your awe-inspiring deeds will be on every tongue;
I will proclaim your greatness.
7 Everyone will share the story of your wonderful goodness;
they will sing with joy about your righteousness.8 The Lord is merciful and compassionate,
slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.
9 The Lord is good to everyone.
He showers compassion on all his creation.
10 All of your works will thank you, Lord,
and your faithful followers will praise you.
11 They will speak of the glory of your kingdom;
they will give examples of your power.
12 They will tell about your mighty deeds
and about the majesty and glory of your reign.
13 For your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.
You rule throughout all generations.The Lord always keeps his promises;
he is gracious in all he does.
14 The Lord helps the fallen
and lifts those bent beneath their loads.
15 The eyes of all look to you in hope;
you give them their food as they need it.
16 When you open your hand,
you satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing.
17 The Lord is righteous in everything he does;
he is filled with kindness.
18 The Lord is close to all who call on him,
yes, to all who call on him in truth.
19 He grants the desires of those who fear him;
he hears their cries for help and rescues them.
20 The Lord protects all those who love him,
but he destroys the wicked.21 I will praise the Lord,
Psalm 145 NLT
and may everyone on earth bless his holy name
forever and ever.
Key Points in Psalm 145
Each verse has lessons for us…
- Exalt, or some versions say extol: This means to lift, raise, or elevate. Praise shines the spotlight on God, centering our concentration on Him. He is elevated in our eyes and thoughts when we praise Him.
- Daily and eternal praise: David praised God daily. And he’s in Heaven right now praising Him. That’s one thing we’ll be doing when we believers get to heaven.
- The Lord’s greatness cannot be measured: He is awesome, almighty, the Creator of Earth, everywhere, and He sees everything.
- Teach your children well: If we don’t teach the next generations about God, no one will. They need to be raised in the Word and taught wisdom, morals, and values so that they can proclaim His power.
- Think about what God has done: Meditation here is not the same as yoga meditation, where you empty your mind. Here you fill your mind with the Word, with what gratitude, and with thoughts of His wonderful miracles.
- Praising God is contagious: You can’t be sad or depressed when you’re praising God. Then others will talk about His miracles.
- Everyone will sing: This is somewhat of a prophetic verse. We don’t read about anything like this until the Book of Revelation.
- God’s love is never-failing: He loves us, everybody! No matter what we do, He is slow to get angry. That means He gives us a chance to repent. That’s a type of compassion that you can’t find on earth. Mercy is not getting what we deserve.
- He is good: He doesn’t discriminate! He is compassionate towards everybody.
- The faithful followers praise Him: Do you praise Him daily? You should live in an attitude of gratitude!
- Imagine what the Glory of His Kingdom will be like: The prophet Isaiah wrote, “For since the world began, no ear has heard and no eye has seen a God like you, who works for those who wait for him!” Isaiah 64:4 NLT
- We followers of Christ need to tell others of His mighty deeds: How can we keep His glory and majesty to ourselves?
- His Kingdom is everlasting. He rules. He always keeps His promises! God is in control. If He said He was going to do something, aka Bible prophecy, He keeps His promises! And He’s gracious in all He does!
- Those who are weary can come to Jesus. He told us, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” Is your soul weary of useless religious rituals, rites, and rules? You can find rest only in Jesus!
- Jesus feeds us what we need when we need it. No matter how many times I read the Bible, my soul and spirit are fed something new, nourishing, and uplifting.
- Jesus has His hand open to you. He gives us Living Water when our souls are thirsty for truth. Light when we are living in darkness. The right Word when we’re hungry for wisdom and guidance. All you need to do is ask with the right motive. (James 4:3)
- He is righteous in all He does. God can’t lie. He keeps His promises.
- He is close to all who come to Him IN TRUTH. “In Truth” is the key term here. When you sincerely call on Jesus, not rambling a man-made prayer like the “Hail Mary“, which is paganism, He hears your prayer.
- You must FEAR GOD. That doesn’t mean to be afraid of Him, but to be in AWE of Him, respect and obey Him.
- The wicked will be destroyed. That’s a promise! (Revelation 19-20)
- Praise the Lord from here to eternity. Give Glory to God in all you do. Thank Him for the smallest of things. I thank Him when I see the hummingbirds at my feeder, for they bring me joy. Thank Him for the beauty of sunrises and sunsets.
It’s all about JESUS
In case you haven’t gotten it by now, it’s ALL ABOUT JESUS! “The LORD” is Jesus! It’s more than just KNOWING that He’s the Son of God, it’s inviting Him into your heart…

Isn’t it about time you let Him in?
