Psalm 99: Cry to the Lord Every Day for Help!

Psalm 99: Cry to the Lord Every Day for Help!

When we’re in trouble, we are usually so caught up in the problem(s) that we forget to cry to the Lord for help. Psalm 99, another Royal Psalm along with Psalms 93, 95, 96, 97, 98, and 100, exalts Jesus as King. It doesn’t mention Jesus by name, but who else sits on His Mighty Throne? Psalm 99

cry out to the Lord our King!

The Lord is king!
    Let the nations tremble!
He sits on his throne between the cherubim.
    Let the whole earth quake!
The Lord sits in majesty in Jerusalem (Zion),
    exalted above all the nations.
Let them praise your great and awesome name.
    Your name is holy!
Mighty King, lover of justice,
    you have established fairness.
You have acted with justice
    and righteousness throughout Israel (Jacob).
Exalt the Lord our God!
Bow low before his feet, for he is holy!

Moses and Aaron were among his priests;
Samuel also called on his name.
They cried to the Lord for help,
    and he answered them.
He spoke to Israel from the pillar of cloud,
and they followed the laws and decrees he gave them.
O Lord our God, you answered them.
You were a forgiving God to them,
but you punished them when they went wrong.

Exalt the Lord our God,
and worship at his holy mountain in Jerusalem,
for the Lord our God is holy!

In Leviticus, we read…

32 Do not bring shame on my holy name, for I will display my holiness among the people of Israel. I am the Lord who makes you holy.

Leviticus 22:32 NLT

And we know from Exodus, one of the 10 Commandments reads…

“You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.

Exodus 20:7 NLT

Paul wrote…

He made you holy by means of Christ Jesus, just as he did for all people everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.

1 Corinthians 1:2 NLT

As it was in the Old Days…

Just like the Old Testament Jews needed to be reminded that Moses and Aaron were God’s designated priests, and Samuel, the prophet called on God for help, we, too can cry to the Lord at any time. Furthermore, He answered them. He does answer our prayers!

Jesus told us…

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Matthew 7:7-8 NIV

You might say, “I pray, but He doesn’t answer my prayers!”

His brother James wrote…

You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

James 4:2-3 NIV

Are you asking with the wrong motives?

Moreover, God is a forgiving God. However, He is also a just and fair God who punishes us when we do wrong. Like He sent the Jews into exile because they worshiped the idols of their pagan neighbors, He will show justice to the rest of the world for not obeying Him. That’s the wrath and tribulation yet to come.

Cry to the Lord Jesus for Salvation!

As Paul wrote…

23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. 25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, 26 for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.

Romans 3:23-26 NLT
