Psalm 92: The Godly will Flourish like Palm Trees and Grow Strong

Psalm 92 is a praise song/prayer, written by a godly psalmist. What does being “godly” mean? How do you live a “godly life”? Let’s dig in…

Psalm 92

A psalm. A song to be sung on the Sabbath Day.

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praises to the Most High.
It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning,
    your faithfulness in the evening,
accompanied by a ten-stringed instrument, a harp,
and the melody of a lyre.

You thrill me, Lord, with all you have done for me!
I sing for joy because of what you have done.
O Lord, what great works you do!
And how deep are your thoughts.
Only a simpleton would not know,
and only a fool would not understand this:
Though the wicked sprout like weeds
    and evildoers flourish,
    they will be destroyed forever.

But you, O Lord, will be exalted forever.
Your enemies, Lord, will surely perish;
    all evildoers will be scattered.
10 But you have made me as strong as a wild ox.
You have anointed me with the finest oil.
11 My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies;
my ears have heard the defeat of my wicked opponents.
12 But the godly will flourish like palm trees
and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon.
13 For they are transplanted to the Lord’s own house.
They flourish in the courts of our God.
14 Even in old age they will still produce fruit;
they will remain vital and green.
15 They will declare, “The Lord is just!
    He is my rock!
There is no evil in him!”

Psalm 92 NLT

Breakdown

The Sabbath

The intro says it is a song for the Sabbath. For practicing Jews, that’s Saturday, it’s their day of rest, prayer, and worship. The Christians changed it to Sundays to celebrate Christ’s Resurrection. At any rate, this was a psalm sung for worship and praise.

Morning and Evening

You can’t go wrong with you start and end your days praising God. I thank God each morning for the day, a good night’s sleep, my home, my car, food in my kitchen, and gas in my car. Acknowledging that everything you own you got because God allowed you to have it is a godly thing to do.

At night, I look at God’s handiwork throughout the day and thank Him.

Godly Praise

When you look at all that God has done for you, you should be thrilled. Did something good happen? Then, that is worthy of praise! Did something bad happen? How did God get help you overcome? Did nothing major happen? Praise Him for a peaceful day! Get it?

Evil in the World

Since God sees everything that goes on in the world, He is aware of wicked people, as well as the godly. Heck, He predicted that bad stuff would happen! He prepares us through Bible Prophecy and comforts us with the knowledge that He wins in the end.

The Godly will Flourish

The Godly will flourish like a palm tree

In the end, the Godly will flourish. Here the godly are compared to tall, strong palm trees.

Having lived in Puerto Rico, Florida, and now in Phoenix, Arizona, I’ve seen strong, fruitful palm trees like the coconut palm pictured here.

I’ve also seen dead ones with only a tall, bare, stalk, still standing. Why did it die? More than likely, it was one of two things: lack of water or a bug or disease infiltrated it.

Hence, it’s a comparison to a godly, or righteous person. The godly person is not expected to be perfect. God is perfect. We humans can never be. However, we can STRIVE to be Christlike and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can discern between good and evil.

All living things need water to survive, as well as nourishment. With proper nourishment, we can fight off invaders like diseases and pests. We get our nourishment from the living Word of God. Even if sin, like a disease attacks, if we humble ourselves and beg forgiveness, Jesus’ death on the cross and His defeat of death assures us that all our sins are forgiven — past, present, and future!

Even in old age, the Godly can be fruitful. Being in my 60s, I love sharing my knowledge and wisdom with younger people.

Like Luke quoted Paul in Acts on the Day of Pentecost

17 ‘In the last days,’ God says,
‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your young men will see visions,
and your old men will dream dreams.
18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit
even on my servants—men and women alike—
    and they will prophesy.

Acts 2:17-18 NLT

The Holy Spirit is Jesus’ gift to Born-Again, saved Believers as we patiently wait for Him to come and get us from this evil world (The Rapture).

If you’re not sure if you’re saved or not, if you truly want to be born again and have the assurance of salvation, receive the Holy Spirit, feel His Shalom — a peace that surpasses all understanding, and get a 1-way, non-stop ticket to Heaven after you die, or that you won’t be left behind at the Rapture, which can happen at any moment, this is what you have to do…

Believe. Repent. Be Baptized. Receive the Holy Spirit.

  • Believe — have Faith — that Jesus is the Christ and He died taking your sins away forever and that He rose from the dead 3 days later.
  • Repent of your sins — stop sinning! Do a complete 180-degree turn in your life and surrender your life to Him. When you ask Jesus to forgive you He will. ALL your sins will be wiped clean — past, present, and future! And All means ALL!
  • Be Baptized by water baptism — show the world and yourself that you have died to your old life and are born again in Christ.
  • Receive the gift of Holy Spirit in your heart.

Invite Jesus into Your Heart and Receive the Gift of Grace, Joy, Peace, and the Confident Hope of Eternal Life…
