27.14: Jesus in the Book of Ruth Finale: Marriage, A Baby Boy and Hope!

Redemption. Historically, the word means purchasing the freedom of a slave in order to set them free. In Hebrew law, when a married man died, his closest, male next-of-kin, had the right to purchase his property and also marry his widow. They came together as a package deal. In the story of Ruth, Naomi is the widow of Elimelech, whose name means “God is King”. Ruth is the widow of Naomi and Elimelech’s son, Mahlon. Apparently, there was a closer “kinsman-redeemer” than Boaz. This person, probably was a 1st cousin, where Boaz may have been a second cousin. The family-redeemer would also save the widow from poverty. Boaz, though in love with Ruth, had to do the right thing and go to the closer kinsman-redeemer before he could marry her. Let’s dig in….
