Is Pride Holding you Back? What You Need to Know…

Pride. It’s one of the 7 Deadly Sins. God doesn’t like pride. Prideful people think they can do it all by themselves and that they don’t need God. That is a lie and they are fooling no one but themselves. Look around the world today. All it took was a tiny, microscopic virus to turn the world on its knees. COVID-19 is an equal opportunity virus. Even if you don’t get sick, more than likely it is affecting your life in more ways than one.

God Hates Pride, but He Loves Humility

The Bible either talks about how bad pride is, or it tells us over an over again to be humble. The Book of Proverbs is full of wise sayings on pride. Here are just 2 of them..

The Lord mocks the mockers but is gracious to the humble.

Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.

Proverbs 3:34; 16:18 NLT

Pride Blocks True Salvation

To be saved, you have to humble yourself.

The inability to receive the grace of God is almost always connected with an overdose of pride.

Charles Stanley

Paul realized this and told the Corinthians…

We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:5 NLT

What You Need to Do Now…

Don’t be like the people of Israel and Judah who didn’t take the prophet Jeremiah seriously…

Lord, you are searching for honesty.
You struck your people,
    but they paid no attention.
You crushed them,
but they refused to be corrected.
They are determined, with faces set like stone;
    they have refused to repent.

Jeremiah 5:3 NLT

God sent the Babylonians 3 times to capture them and destroy their land as well as the Temple and the city of Jerusalem. That was Solomon’s Temple. Solomon, the 3rd King of Israel, son of David. Here’s a little bit of his story and what God told him…

So Solomon finished the Temple of the Lord, as well as the royal palace. He completed everything he had planned to do in the construction of the Temple and the palace. Then one night the Lord appeared to Solomon and said,

“I have heard your prayer and have chosen this Temple as the place for making sacrifices. At times I might shut up the heavens so that no rain falls, or command grasshoppers to devour your crops, or send plagues among you. Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land. My eyes will be open and my ears attentive to every prayer made in this place.

2 Chronicles 7:11-15 NLT

What God wants us to do is rather simple…

James tells us…

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.

James 4:10 NLT

Peter writes something similar…

So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.

1 Peter 5:6 NLT

The key phrase here is “at the right time“. God’s timing might not fit with your timing, but God’s timing is always spot on.

Accept God’s Word as the Ultimate Authority

Pride is deceitful and will cause you to fall. Surrender — admit it — without God you can do nothing. Paul writes in the letter to Titus…

When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. Because of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.

Titus 3:4-7 NLT

Jesus said…

John 15:5

“Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned.”

John 15:4-6 NLT

And if you still are not convinced… Jesus also said…

But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

Matthew 23:12 NLT

Don’t wait for God to humble you. Do it on your own.

Pray this prayer humbly and wholeheartedly…

“Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I believe You died for my sins. Please forgive me. Right now, I turn from my sins and open the door of my heart and my life to you. I confess You as my personal Lord and Savior. I will follow you for the rest of my life. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Remember the 5 Solas…

The 5 Solas

  1. Sola Scriptura (“Scripture alone”): The Bible alone is our highest authority.
  2. Sola Fide (“Faith alone”): We are saved through faith alone in Jesus Christ.
  3. Sola Gratia (“Grace alone”): We are saved by the grace of God alone.
  4. Solus Christus (“Christ alone”): Jesus Christ alone is our Savior, Redeemer, Lord, and King
  5. Soli Deo Gloria (“to God alone be the Glory.”): It’s all about God, not us.
