Who knows you better than God? Nobody. Psalm 139 is King David’s most beautiful ballad. It describes in loving detail what a relationship with your Loving Father is like. Also, if you think you can ever hide from God, you are sorely mistaken! He sees EVERYTHING that you do. Good AND bad! We’ll take it section by section. Let’s dig in…
Psalm 139
1 O Lord, you have examined my heart
Psalm 139: 1-6 NLT
and know everything about me.
2 You know when I sit down or stand up.
You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
3 You see me when I travel
and when I rest at home.
You know everything I do.
4 You know what I am going to say
even before I say it, Lord.
5 You go before me and follow me.
You place your hand of blessing on my head.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too great for me to understand!
Basically, there is nothing that you do, even think, that God is not aware of. He’ll lead and guide you, but you have to let Him. Even if you think you can do it all yourself, He’s following you, watching over you. Yes, it’s too great for us humans to understand!
We read in Proverbs…
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT
do not depend on your own understanding.
6 Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.
And in Isaiah…
8 “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.
Isaiah 55:8-9 NLT
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
9 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.
In other words, don’t try to figure God out. Give in to Him and allow Him to guide you! Trust in Him only!
Going on…
7 I can never escape from your Spirit!
Psalm 139:7-12 NLT
I can never get away from your presence!
8 If I go up to heaven, you are there;
if I go down to the grave, (Sheol) you are there.
9 If I ride the wings of the morning,
if I dwell by the farthest oceans,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
and your strength will support me.
11 I could ask the darkness to hide me
and the light around me to become night—
12 but even in darkness I cannot hide from you.
To you the night shines as bright as day.
Darkness and light are the same to you.
Jesus is the Light of the World! The night darkness cannot hide you from God.
We read in Book of Hebrews…
13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.
Hebrews 4:13 NLT
Continuing…
13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
Psalm 139: 13-16 NLT
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
15 You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
16 You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed.
This part is quoted a lot by anyone who is anti-abortion and believes in the sanctity of life. Over on Instagram, LiveAction.org has a series called BabyOlivia. It follows baby Olivia as God knits her in her mother’s womb….
Life is amazing! Anyone who truly KNOWS GOD, knows that every life, whether inside or outside of the womb is a precious person with a heart, a soul and a mind. Each person deserves to live.
Continuing….
17 How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
They cannot be numbered!
18 I can’t even count them;
they outnumber the grains of sand!
And when I wake up,
you are still with me!19 O God, if only you would destroy the wicked!
Get out of my life, you murderers!
20 They blaspheme you;
your enemies misuse your name.
21 O Lord, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you?
Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you?
22 Yes, I hate them with total hatred,
for your enemies are my enemies.23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Psalm 139: 17-24 NLT
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 Point out anything in me that offends you,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
We all need to earnestly pray those last 2 verses every day. That’s how we stay on the straight and narrow. We cannot do it on our own. We need God’s guidance every single day.
The Good News is that when you accept Jesus as your personal savior, that begins your personal relationship with God. In addition, you reap the benefits of salvation, including having the Holy Spirit in your heart to help guide you every moment of your life. HE is the one who sanctifies you. You cannot do it yourself.
You Also Gain Wisdom
Real wisdom is not trying to understand oneself — like the new age folks would like you to believe. In truth, true wisdom comes in KNOWING GOD! It’s realizing that God has you pegged. He understands you better than you know yourself!
Let HIM sort out YOUR inner life!
How? By surrendering your life to Him…
